Van de late middeleeuwen tot de renecance (12e tot 17e eeuw), was de Beukelaar een veel gebruikt schild in combinatie met een 1 hand zwaard.
\nOf bij gevechten met dolk, mes of Rapier<\/p>\n

Niet alleen om slagen van de vijand op te vangen.
\nMaar ook om slagen uit te delen,
\nzowel met de bolle kant als ook de zijkant kon men harde klappen geven.<\/p>\n

In tegenstelling tot wat veel mensen denken, is een beukelaar niet alleen voor gevechten in harnas.<\/p>\n

Een van de oudste manuscripten, MS I.33, daterend van +\/- 1270, vermeld en beschrijft het gebruik van de beukelaar.
